PROJECT: “Sea Shapes” 2026
“Sea Shapes” is an extension of my sculptural exploration begun a few years ago with my “Land Shapes” series where I focus on creating biomorphic objects and expressing them in three-dimensional space. I reference forms, textures and colors from a myriad selection of sources and mix them up to create abstractions that bear the residue of sometimes quite disparate organic elements.
In my current sculptures I am taking my experience of viewing, photographing and drawing the seaweed and rocks of mid-coastal Maine and combining them with the colors and surfaces of other organic objects. I believe that all of existence is related and common elements are shared on a bimolecular as well as a surface level, and I try to bring that concept into my art practice.
“Sea Shape 01” is based on both live and sun-dried kelp fronds and mixed with the pure yellow of forsythia flowers. “Sea Shape 02” is a different twist of kelp and combined with the colors of small sea shells I’ve collected. “Sea Shape 03” and “Sea Shape 04” are additional kelp-inspired forms with colors derived from the iridescent greens and glossy blacks of beetle carapaces.
In my studio I have a number of new pieces developing for this series exploring seaweed, rocks and water currents. I’ll be in Maine this summer to do further research including visits to cranberry bogs and kelp farms as well as exploring the rocky shoreline. I’ll add new pieces to this page as they are completed.
